Fill your tank completely, reset your trip odometer, drive normally, then fill up again. Divide the miles driven by gallons used. For example: 350 miles ÷ 12 gallons = 29.2 MPG.

EPA testing uses standardized conditions. Real-world factors lower MPG: city driving, aggressive acceleration, cold weather, AC use, roof racks, heavy cargo, under-inflated tires, and short trips where the engine doesn't fully warm up.

Speed has the biggest impact. Most cars hit peak efficiency at 45-55 mph. Above 60 mph, every 5 mph increase costs roughly $0.20-0.30 more per gallon. City vs highway driving, tire pressure, and driving style also have major effects.
