Divide the trip distance by your car's MPG to get gallons needed, then multiply by the gas price. For example: 500 miles ÷ 28 MPG = 17.9 gallons × $3.50 = $62.50.

The average fuel economy for new cars in the US is about 25-27 MPG combined. Compact cars get 30-40 MPG, SUVs get 20-28 MPG, and trucks get 15-22 MPG. Hybrids can achieve 45-60 MPG.

Drive at moderate speeds (55-65 mph is optimal), keep tires properly inflated, avoid aggressive acceleration and braking, remove excess weight, use cruise control on highways, and combine errands to reduce total miles.
