A complete month is counted when the same day-of-month is reached in the following month. For example, January 15 to March 15 is exactly 2 months. January 15 to March 10 is 1 month and 24 days.

A year is exactly 12 months. But the number of days in those months varies (28-31), so a year is 365 or 366 days depending on whether it's a leap year.
