How Tipping Works
In many countries, a tip (gratuity) is added on top of the bill for service — restaurants, delivery, taxis, and hotels. Common percentages in the US for sit-down dining are 15–20% of the pre-tax subtotal; some regions include service in the bill (service compris) — always read the check.
Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip
Splitting divides the total (or the tip only) equally among guests — our calculator handles per-person amounts.
Pre-Tax vs Post-Tax
| Approach | Common practice |
|---|---|
| Pre-tax | Tip on food/drink subtotal before sales tax |
| Post-tax | Tip on full amount including tax — slightly higher |
There's no universal rule — local custom wins. In some cities, delivery apps add separate service fees that are not the driver's tip.
International Differences
In Japan, tipping can be awkward; in Europe, service may be included with optional small rounding. Research before you travel — undertipping can offend; overtipping can confuse.
When in doubt, ask locally or check guidebooks for current norms.
